Earlier this week, I had to take a day off of work to stay home with my sick 6 year old daughter.
She was feeling okay, so we decided to play a game, do some crafts and “decorate” her room. At one point, she asked me for some tape so she could put something on the outside of her bedroom door. So, I asked her what she was going to tape to her door, to which she answered, “you’ll see, mom… it will be a surprise.” Oh, how I love those words, yet shudder a little on the inside.
So, I waited out in the living room for her “surprise.” After about 10 minutes or so, I had heard enough tape being dispensed. Just as I was about to say, “okay, honey, that’s enough tape…,” she came to get me and showed me what was taped to her door. It melted my heart.
I asked her what she was thinking and why she chose all of these particular items (two U.S. flags, her name in rainbow colors, her palm from Palm Sunday and a saying that she recites at her Daisy/Girl Scout meeting). And she said, pointing to each item, “because, mommy, they all are things that I love! I love the flag, I love Jesus so much, my name is pretty and I want to remember to be honest and fair.”
It made me well-up a bit, but I told her how proud I was of her and told her that I loved her heart. Got me to thinking, what would I put on MY door? What would you put on YOURS? I don’t know… just something to think about….
