Predictions For The 2018 CMA Awards

The 2018 Country Music Awards are so close you can almost hear Brad and Carrie’s corny jokes, can’t you? Here are my picks sure to make you a ‘Millionaire‘ if you decide to put a few sheckels on the line.

Let’s start with the lower awards and work our way up, shall we?

Song of the Year

“Body Like A Back Road,” Sam Hunt
“Broken Halos,” Chris Stapleton
“Drowns the Whiskey,” Jason Aldean feat. Miranda Lambert
“Drunk Girl,” Chris Janson
“Tequila,” Dan + Shay

Let’s immediately eliminate BLABR because I feel like country music fans would lose their shite if Sam Hunt wins this. I genuinely love Tequila the most of all 5 and appreciate the message Janson lays out in Drunk Girl, but think this is one that CMA darling Chris Stapleton brings home.

Single of the Year

“Broken Halos,” Chris Stapleton
“Drinkin’ Problem,” Midland
“Drowns the Whiskey,” Jason Aldean feat. Miranda Lambert
“Meant to Be,” Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line
“Tequila,” Dan + Shay

You’re wondering… “What’s the difference between Song of the Year and Single of the Year?” Song is an award that the actual songwriters get the credit for, single is for the artist that performs it. (i.e.- Taylor Swift won Song of the Year for Little Big Town’s ‘Better Man’ last year).

I feel like this award is one of 2 slam dunks, FGL and Bebe Rexha have had a song that crossed over, crossed back and might just be remembered as the best collaberation that Florida Georgia Line has cut (sorry Backstreet Boys). Plus, she is preforming the song with them. I don’t think they have her on the show if they don’t have them winning it.

Vocal Group of the Year

Lady Antebellum
Little Big Town
Old Dominion

This is a toss up for me.  I could easily see Little Big Town repeating because they are just so freaking good, but I think Old Dominion cashes in here just like they did at the ACMs.

Album of the Year

From A Room: Volume 2, Chris Stapleton
Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves
Graffiti U, Keith Urban
Life Changes, Thomas Rhett
The Mountain, Dierks Bentley

This is one of two sentimental picks for me.  I am a huge Thomas Rhett fan and just think that top-to-bottom, this album is honestly the best of the year. 4 songs hit #1 and he released ‘Sixteen’ a few weeks ago and that’s already in line to hit Top-10 next week. I might just shatter my plasma screen TV if Stapleton gets his trips here. The outlier here is  Musgraves. It’s been done before and I could see the CMA’s playing the equality card and Golden Hour winning AOTY. And if that happens, the crowd will rejoice.

New Artist of the Year

Lauren Alaina
Luke Combs
Chris Janson
Brett Young

I have been saying for weeks that there is no way that Luke Combs doesn’t win this. But now, as I type this… I could see Brett Young winning. I am in no way trying to hedge my bet here, I just think that Young has had a great month, he was awarded  Songwriter of the Year and got married less than two weeks ago! What better ‘awwww’ moment for him than to win the award, walk on stage, thank his fans, record label, management, country radio and lastly, fighting through tears his new wife!?! Talk about all the feels… I’m sticking with my gut though. Combs ’18.

Vocal Duo of the Year

Brothers Osborne
Dan + Shay
Florida Georgia Line
Maddie & Tae

I’ve got TJ and John three-peating here, but Dan + Shay have had a great year as well, in fact, if anyone deserves, it D+S do. They’ve been nominated the last 5 years so if anyone is ‘due’ it’s Smyers + Mooney. I don’t see Florida Georgia Line claiming this one since I have them landing Single of the Year. I could legitimately see the Bros holding court on this ala Brooks & Dunn from ’92-’06.

Female Vocalist of the Year

Kelsea Ballerini
Miranda Lambert
Maren Morris
Kacey Musgraves
Carrie Underwood

If the last 3 years are any indication (Miranda, Carrie, Miranda) it should be Underwood’s turn. That being said, this is another sentimental choice of mine in Maren Morris. She has crossed over with her ‘The Middle‘ collab and is very active on her social media platforms I could see her snagging this award. And if she does… don’t miss her acceptance speech because if there is anyone in country now that will pull no punches and expose the industry for the lack of female artists being pushed on radio, it’s Morris. That’s also why I hope she scores the win.

Male Vocalist of the Year

Dierks Bentley
Luke Combs
Thomas Rhett
Chris Stapleton
Keith Urban

4 years in a row for Stapleton? I could see it, but maybe a Rhett win is just wishful thinking on my part. Let me be transparent here: I like Chris Stapleton, I have a man-crush on Thomas Rhett… musically. Do I think TR is the best singer? No. I think it’s because we are the same age and I can relate to the songs he writes and sings. I can’t relate to Stapleton that way. Probably because I can’t grow a beard for the life of me.

Entertainer of the Year

Jason Aldean
Luke Bryan
Kenny Chesney
Chris Stapleton
Keith Urban

2002 was the last time the previous year’s winner wasn’t even nominated, until this year. Garth Brooks won’t claim the 3-peat so I think the award goes back to the 2014-2015 winner Luke Bryan. I’m not sure why I think he wins it, heck, any of the 5 could win. It’s been 3 years since Aldean has gone home with a CMA, maybe if he named his daughter something like Callie Mae Aldean instead of Navy Rome Aldean he’d have a clear shot.
