An original four-part documentary series, “A Homegrown Miracle,” which chronicles the 1980 Miracle on Ice that captured a nation and transcended from just a sporting event to a cultural phenomenon, is coming soon. The series, produced by GizMomentum Media will be aired in four parts on 5 Eyewitness News beginning on March 8 and continuing for four weeks through Sunday, March 29.
The documentary series features interviews with nine members of the gold medal winning Team USA hockey team that defeated the powerful Soviet Union team by a score of 4-3, on February 22, 1980. The win catapulted the team to capture the gold medal two days later with a win over Finland. “A Homegrown Miracle” will feature interviews with Team USA members Bill Baker, Neal Broten, Dave Christian ,Robbie McClanahan, Mike Ramsey, John Harrington, Steve Janaszak, Buzz Schneider, and Phil Verchota, who were nine of the team’s 13 players from Minnesota. Executive Producer Eric Gislason, owner of GizMomentum Media has a strong track record for telling stories about local sports and athletes. Prior to “A Homegrown Miracle” Gislason produced the highly successful series “Town Ball: Uniquely Minnesota” which showcases the 100-plus year history of Town Team Baseball in the state.
“I felt it was really important to acknowledge the contribution of the Minnesota guys on this historic team,” said Gislason. “I think it is important that the younger generation understands the real story about this team and the impact these Minnesotans had on this time in history.”
