Young, dumb and now with a criminal record… Two Staples men in their 20’s arrested for the smoothest of all capers.

Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reports that charges are pending against 25-year-old Ryan Schmidt and 22-year-old Daniel Hinz Jr. both from Staples for their association in a theft that happened at the Stanchfield Lake Access in Morrison County.

Just after 7 p.m. on Friday, December 14th,  the Sherriff’s Department took a call that someone had their vehicle broken into at Stanchfield Lake Access. The accuser was missing a black backpack and a Jiffy Propane Ice Auger. A deputy arrived and spoke to a witness who gave a description of a possible suspect’s vehicle.

The deputy later located the suspect vehicle leaving Lake Alexander approximately five miles from where the theft occurred. The deputy directed a traffic stop and noticed an ice auger that matched the one that was stolen.

The deputy confirmed that the suspects were in possession of the stolen items which were returned the items to the owner.

The suspects were arrested and brought to Morrison County Jail where they awaiting formal charges.

Now, in no way am I condoning theft… but c’mon. Maybe hide the stuff and come back later? It’s stories like this that allow me to share the legendary Fred Sanford and his oh-so-appropriate catch phrase:
